r/Askreddit What Made You Quit Your Job on Your First Day?

r/Askreddit We've all worked terrible jobs before, but these jobs are the worst of the worst. These Reddit users have stories from toxic bosses, unbearable customers, and horrible working conditions. For example, one Reddit user went to a job where he was expected to take advantage of senior citizens to sell them junk they didn't need and couldn't afford. Another Reddit user had a boss who expected OP to live on a $3,500/year salary. Yeah, you read that right... $3,500 PER YEAR.

🤔 r/Askreddit What's Your "I Don't Get Paid Enough For This" Moment? www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxzXL...

  • Cutco got really upset because when they emailed me about my resume that I wrote for RESTAURANT JOBS on one of those job boards, I already knew they were a scam because I had been to one of their interviews before and I cussed them out, told them they were a scam and that I was uninterested. They gave me this smartass "if you don't want employers to contact you, don't make your resume public" MY RESUME. WAS. FOR. RESTAURANTS. IT HAD MY FOOD SAFETY AND TABC QUALIFICATIONS. FUCK. OFF.

  • About the "Don't be a hero" orientation There absolutely are people who have tried to "be a hero" at their jobs because they thought they would get in trouble if they didn't. My dumbass was one of those people. 😂

  • I have a story where I only worked for like 3 or 4 days at a shoe store. The manager/owner was a total jerk, always saying "I'm a type A personality so deal with it" maybe Type A personality meant Type Asshole. My "interview" with her wasn't even an interview, it was basically her telling me what I'd need to do and stuff... The only reason she was interested in hiring me was she was a friend of my grandma's sister and my grandma let her know immediately I was looking for a job.... And that I have Aspergers. Long story short; she and her husband tried to take advantage of the fact that I had a disability and treated me like crap, they wanted me to go through a program where they'd basically get paid to have me working for them! I felt so used..

As soon as things start to get weird I unfortunately have to dip because I won’t put myself in a possibly unsafe situation as I’m a mom myself. I hate it because, a.) When I was a kid a girl I often watched was murdered by her back up sitter (shaken baby syndrome). So when I watch kids I KNOW they’re safe. I hate not knowing who the next person will be to care for the kiddos as it’s hard not to bond with every single one of them. And B.) I feel AWFUL for the next young woman who has to put up with these pigs.

So I could fake having Tourette's Syndrome until they tried to kick me out. Then I could just run around the room screaming incoherently. Worth it.

  • Not on first day but shortly after at a famous family restaurant. I had just turned 17 a couple days before. My primary job was busboy, dishwasher and general cleaning. Manger comes to me and says that the women's restroom needed cleaning. I grabbed the cart and headed in, OMG.... There was no way this was an accident. In one of the stalls was blood smeared every where, walls, toilet, floor, literally everywhere. I promise anything you can imagine, double or triple it. I walked back out, told the manager that there was no way i was going to clean that up. He informed me, that is part of my job. I asked him had he seen it and he said he didn't need to. I told him that he needed to check it out that i refused to clean that mess up. He informed me that either i clean it or leave. I removed my red cloth apron and handed it to him.. At just over 16 I had never thought that a human could be that nasty.

It sounded like a bad pyramid scheme to me and I never even bothered to give them the time of day. Awful way to do business. Awful way to brainwash people. Cutco is another name for this company. How about "Overpriced Mess." Anyway, they expected you to play dress-up, ie: shirt and tie. (I don't get dressed up for anything, not even funerals.) They bitched that I was wearing combat boots. Then here's the kicker: False advertising. It wasn't taking pictures, or working in the darkroom, it was _telemarketing!_ They expected you to call people right at suppertime and interrupt their meal to try and sell them a picture package. I got up and walked out after 15 minutes. I didn't even say anything, I just left.

Job hunting in my field is such a pain and can take over a year (I had been looking for 7 months) just to nail down any worthwhile job. 9/10 times a job posting is for one of these shady jobs. • Regarding 3:29-3:42, most companies that tell you not to do this probably say not to for liability reasons. Likely what happened is KFC had a guy stupid enough to try to prevent a robbery get injured/killed and the company got sued for it for some reason. After that, they added explicit "don't do this" instructions to their training video so that injuries due to reckless actions in a robbery don't end up on the company itself. It's kind of like how you have those stupid "do not ingest/consume" labels on things the average human being would know are toxic: the labels are there to absolve the company that made said product of liability under the law if someone does eat/drink something they shouldn't.

  • i would like to mention that Kirby vacuums and the Kirby company themselves are great. the machines are great quality and will last forever and do almost everything. the issue is that Kirby sells to distributors like car companies, so a lot of the distributors are sleazeballs and most of the time mark the machines WAY up and use really sleazy and pushy sales tactics and often lie and push their employees. not all of them are like this, but a lot of them are. i am a huge fan of Kirby vacuum cleaners and i have quite a few, my oldest being from the 1940s and it works great. if anyone is going to get one i would absolutely recommend a used machine. even the older models still work just as good as the new ones and they can be had for a lot less, and all the parts are standardized, so the bags, belts and most other parts are the same as the new ones, so finding parts is not an issue.

  • I'm telling you wages are going down not up. I was hired straight out of college and started at $12.00 in 1975 an hour and all the overtime I wanted at time and a half & after five years I was making $19 an hour. I retired in 2010 and saw an ad in 2021 for the very same job with a starting wage of $8 an hour with 2 years experience. The job hasn't changed, gotten easier, so how do they Justify cut in pay when prices for everything has gone up. People think they are making more money in 2021 when in 1975 I was making nearly twice as much without any experience, fresh out of college. Young people who know this are very justified in being angry. I bought my first house in 1979 for 45k 3 bedroom 2 bath brand new brick rancher on a 1 Acre Lot my house payments were $450 a month including insurance and property taxes, and this house was in a nice neighborhood with a great school system. So I made more money, and it cost less to live, what happened?.

Guy comes in, I show him how to pour the potatoes in the hopper, then into the cutters, and then how to blanch them. He went out for a smoke break and never came back. I'm still not sure if he was offended by the creation of french fries, or that he'd have to lift several fifty lb bags over his head into the hopper, many times a day.

Day one he told us he had the best warranty around. I told him about sportsman dream knives has a better warranty that if the knives were ever damaged even if it was the owners fault there were replaced free, they wanted the customer to buy it but for half price. He called me a liar to my face. I quit and came back later to show him the warranty. I worked at a family restaurant where the own sold it, the new owner(s) three ladies that could not agree on anything. The worst thing was when it started to show down they let people go. I was getting really tired of not knowing how long I would work to so when it started getting real so I said I'm going to go. One said if you leave then you are quitting. I said ok, I quit and left.

On my first day the lady explained my job duties and for some reason I can't remember she left me in the store alone. Before she left she pointed to a drawer and told me that's where the gun was kept but if someone tried to rob me to just give them what they wanted. Luckily I wasn't robbed. No customers came in at all and I just watched tv all day. It was the most boring thing I ever did. I never went back.

  • I don't know if Cutco has changed their practices in the last few years, but when I sold Cutco, you bought a knife block for demonstration purposes. It is your knife block, I still have it. I would go do demonstrations and get paid by Cutco per demonstration even if no one bought anything. If someone bought something, I would get a commission cheque. Which I could use to give people a bonus item if I so chose. I never had to sign anyone up for anything or buy more knives to have physical inventory to sell. If you hit certain targets you got bonuses. That's pretty standard sales. That is not an MLM scheme.

Though to be honest I’m sure these places just accept everyone, because we all were just contractors. So they don’t have to pay us unless we make a sale, and so many people leave real quick. The shit they taught us to make a sale was so shady. We were taught to tel people that a two hour demonstration was only 20 minutes, because that was how long the actual cleaning for the demonstration took. The trainer actually told us a story about how he tricked his way into a house by asking to use the bathroom, then did a presentation, and seemed proud of it. I don’t know if he actually got kicked out or not, but I hope so. Kirby is an amazing vacuum, it really is. Their longtime salesman on the other hand are scum. They had us work for 12+ hours a day not including the fact they drive us to different cities. They had incentives to make you work more, but you still had to sell a certain number of vacuums to get them. I never sold one because the whole thing just felt wrong, and I regret the time I put into that crap. But live and learn.

  • The story with the vacuum and the old lady, I had this same kind of issue happen. If you have ever heard of Heartland America don't let your grandparents or even parents fall for their scam. If they buy something you have to convince these people to also buy their super expensive membership plans. I hated it and quit. I think it is wrong that this magazine company caters to those on social security and tries to force people to buy their crappy chinesium products that are just shit.

  • Bro, I went to the same type of Cutco orientation. It was 2005, I noped out once I realized that I was selling something I personally had to buy. I remember having to bring a new ring note book to put their MLM propaganda into.

  • I had just finished university and desperate for a job. I signed up to a catering agency. One day they called me and asked me if I wanted to wash dishes in the Ikea customer restaurant for the day. I thought why not. I got there and the manager was probably the rudest person I have ever met. She looked me straight up and down. She took me to the other side of the building, which took about 15 mins. She was extremely rude to me and was very miserable aswell. I put it down to her being extremly overweight! She gave me the uniform and told me to find my own way back. As she left room I noticed the staff exit door to the car pack. I dumped the uniform and walked straight out. The funny thing I still got paid from the agency and they never mentioned anything!

  • I worked for a company that was supposed to be "marketing" too. I had the emails and text messages that proved they offered an hourly rate, then salary, and they didn't have me sign paperwork (due to covid having the building closed. I was going to the owners HOME and putting up fliers) until almost a month later that said it was 100% commission. I never got a dime from them and I hired a lawyer to get that money.
