  • I took a marketing job with a window company in my early 20's I wont say which one just that they have the same name as a certain well known restaurant chain the job title was field marketing representative the job itself? Was to spend 6 to 9 hrs in a specific big box store (you know the one where you'll find all the crazies) harassing their customer base (specifically home owners) to enter them into a sweepstakes (which required the personal information of said customers which was then used to call them to harass them into purchasing our windows...yep that's right I was the first step to those annoying phone calls we all hate) the sweepstakes was a real thing though so I felt a little less bad about my job one of the lines we were required to say to make our windows more appealing is that they were bulletproof now me being a gun nut knows full well nothing is truly bullet proof just bullet resistant til it isnt well one day the marketing manager happened to be there while I was engaging with a customer, (professional way of saying harassing some poor sob on boss's orders), this guy genuinely seemed interested in our offer and we got to talking about the product line it's great insulation and ability to lower your electric bill (I shit you not these people wanted these poor customers to believe these windows could raise jesus) now having alot of family in construction ik a good set of windows can indeed help lower your electric bill but only marginally but since it wasnt a lie I talked it up as I was supposed to now after this customer entered our sweepstakes the marketing manager came up and asked why I didnt point out that they were bullet proof ( that's right I just conned this poor sod into receiving phone calls from us at all hrs of the night and this biotch is complaining that me exaggerating their windows wasnt good enough and that I should've outright lied) now at the time I was 22 just had my first son and was trying to be a better man for him so I told her that I am more than happy to walk around and bother people while they are just trying to shop but that I will not lie to their customers just to sell a few windows she fired me on the spot a week later I called her up told her my parents were interested in their "bullet proof windows and asked if she could accompany a salesman and bring along a sample like the one we had outside of our kiosk ( I had told my father exactly how I lost my job and it didnt sit right with him so he wanted to prove something to these people beyond a shadow of a doubt) so 2 weeks later the marketing manager and a sales rep show up with the demo product (now lemme be clear the only difference between their actual windows and their demo windows is that their demo windows srent mounted into a house so essentially it's a fully functioning product just not installed) my dad tells them they can set up the demo in the back yard and they do so so my dad sits there talking with them asking lots of questions (hes one of the family members who worked in construction that I mentioned earlier so he knows his stuff fairly well) and then without missing a beat he excuses himself then comes back in less than 3 mins he then asks if their windows are bulletproof or bullet resistant at this point the marketing managers face turns pale white I'm pretty sure she knew where this is going the sales rep then immediately responds buddy you could hold this window in front of you while on tour in iraq and never catch a bullet (very important side note my dad isn't my birth father he raised me since I was about 9 and has a son of his own whose older than me and a military vet so this visibly struck a nerve ) he pulls out his glock says in his booming voice clear the range live fire the sales rep and marketing manager got up do god damn fast I swear they were in two places at once my dad then proceeds to empty the whole mag into this window the window sill the whole shebang by the time he cleared the weapon there was just plastic and glass all over the yard he looks dead ass at the sales rep and without missing a beat says "I'm really happy the military issued my son body armor and not one of your windows" I'm dying laughing at this point needless to say a few months later their kiosk was gone and a few weeks after that they were in my areas big box store (same chain) and were no longer advertising their bulletproof windows

I have confused people in stores for employees before, but when I realize they are in fact not employees I laugh at myself, apologize and feel a bit embarrassed for not only looking foolish but for bothering someone. I just can not understand how people freak out in public like that.

  • Okay. I know this video is a year old, but I have a sorta similar issue with Cutco. One of my best friends worked for them for a bit and they encouraged their employees to recommend friends as potential hires. He put me down figuring I’d either try for a job or say no (he gave me a heads up) and when they called me I told them I wasn’t comfortable with going door to door selling things. (As a young woman with mild social anxiety I was well aware that ‘career path’ wasn’t for me) The lady on the phone assured me that they had need for people to answer phones as well and if I was interested she could set up an interview for that. This... this I thought I could do... and I really needed a job. So I figured what the heck, I’ll give it a shot. So I go in a few days later for the interview. Turns out there were a lot of us, and after this big presentation they sit us down for the individual interviews. Apparently I passed with flying colors, however when I asked about the position I’d been told I was interviewing for, since the entire presentation was about door to door, I was told that they weren’t hiring for that and NO ONE would have told me that... ... uh... okay... It’s safe to say I no longer had any interest in working there ever. The atmosphere for me suddenly went from slightly awkward to WARNING WILL ROBINSON WARNING And as soon as it was polite to do so, I vacated the premises. I was then hounded for several WEEKS by the guy who had interviewed me even though I made it clear that I had no interest in being a door to door saleswoman. (Plus my car was very much out of commission at the time, but even that fact didn’t dissuade him.) It got to the point where I had to tell him I’d gotten a position somewhere else for him to finally leave me alone. (Though my dad was very much ready to give him a piece of his mind) I think I still have a voicemail or two somewhere... maybe... I’d have to look. It was several years ago.

Like chill, no I just also happened to be buying THE SAME THING so I happened to know that answer. Or offered to help someone who was too short reach something up high. Because I chose to help someone if its convenient and I'm able doesn't mean I will help everyone all day long, ESPECIALLY if you act like a nutter.

When we had the devastating bushfires here in 2019/2020 a certain organization with the initials RC had a bushfire appeal, raising millions of dollars, supposedly to help victims of the fires. It then came to light that the money wouldn't be exclusively for the bushfire victims but could be used across whatever programmes and services they provide. Once the money is in their hand they do with it what they want even though people donated under the belief it would all go to the bushfire victims. A scam to me.
